"My journey as an HMC Scholar began with a rigorous selection process reminiscent of university applications. Essays, interviews, and English proficiency tests marked the path to earning this esteemed scholarship," Dunja reflected.
Relocating at the age of 17 from Serbia to Durham, England, presented both challenges and opportunities. "Moving to a new country at such a young age was something I never thought I would do. I felt completely alone, but the understanding and support I received at Durham School, especially as a non-native English speaker, made the transition really positive," she shared.
Being an HMC Scholar opened doors to unique opportunities, including trips across the North East and access to university facilities. "The programme not only enriched my academic journey but also created a positive and supportive environment for scholars like me," Dunja remarked.
Dunja's most recent academic trip unfolded during her time at the United Nations in New York City. "The visit provided an unparalleled opportunity to witness the inner workings of the UN. Lectures from UN professionals, a guided tour, and the chance to observe a live meeting made it an unforgettable experience," she recalled.
The trip, organised by UNA Serbia, was offered at one of the seminars on diplomacy that Dunja attended a year prior. After hearing about the trip, it became a unique gift for Dunja, aligning with her 18th birthday.
Reflecting on the impact of the UN visit, Dunja expressed, "It was a pivotal moment for me. Initially inclined towards business and economics, the trip inspired me to shift my focus to economics and politics, particularly global affairs and international relations. It was the inside look that sparked a genuine passion."
Although, the trip centred around the two-day mission to the UN and Serbian UN Headquarters, there was plenty of time dedicated to sightseeing and touristic activities which were definitely a highlight for Dunja, “It was quite a journey in an areophane 10 hours with people, you don’t know, seven days with strangers, but luckily we all made really good friends, and we all got to feel like a New Yorker”
Currently awaiting responses from universities abroad, including NYU Abu Dhabi, Spain, Austria and America, Dunja is enthusiastic about contributing to global initiatives. "This journey has been transformative. It has reshaped my academic aspirations and we got some really good recommendations for the programmes that we as young people can access and get closer to the UN.”
As Dunja's academic journey unfolds, it serves as a testament to the transformative power of international experiences and the boundless possibilities that emerge when students embrace opportunities.
