Pygmalion
The Second, in the Luce Theatre - Durham School, is George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion. This Senior School production in March.
Pygmalion, a romance in five acts, is a celebrated play that premiered in 1913 in Vienna, presented in German, before making its way to the English stage in 1914. The play is a humane comedy that delves into themes of love and the rigid English class system.
At its core, Pygmalion tells the story of Professor Henry Higgins, a phonetics expert, who bets that he can transform Eliza Doolittle, a poor flower girl with a strong Cockney accent, into a refined lady capable of passing as a duchess at an ambassador’s garden party. The transformation highlights the superficiality of social distinctions based on language and behaviour.
