Student Scholars at the Heart of History: Carrying the Durham Gospels

Durham Cathedral Schools Foundation

This weekend marks the installation of Reverend Canon Dr. Philip Plyming as the new Dean of Durham. Saturday 16th September 2023 the momentous event will unfold at Durham Cathedral, where the service promises to be a celebration of faith, tradition, and the rich history embodied by our iconic cathedral

It also marks a tremendous honour for a number of our DCSF pupils who are playing special roles. Two of our Kings Scholars will have the prestigious honour of holding the Durham Gospels, Hannah and Timon. As well as several of our Choristers being involved in the Cathedral Choir, which will be singing throughout the service.

For these students, being chosen to participate in this prestigious event is not just an honour; it's a profound moment of reflection on their academic journey at Durham School. Hannah explained that "Being a Kings Scholar has allowed me to push my academic boundaries throughout my time at Durham." The scholarship has opened doors to experiences that go beyond the classroom, including chances to be a part of such historic installations.

Hannah is eager to immerse herself in the music and choir (including our Choristers) at the service, "I'm very much looking forward to hearing the choir as I love the acoustics of the Cathedral.".

Timon expressed "It is a great privilege to be a part of the ceremony and the Deans installation. I'm very proud to play a role in it", as well as his excitement to learn more about the Durham Gospels and seeing the order of service “I think it'll be really nice to see how the service works. I've never really seen a service like this, so it'll be interesting to see and be a part of."

The Durham Gospels date back to the early 700s. The manuscripts are among the rarest treasures preserved within Durham. DCSF is beyond proud of all of our pupils that will be a part of the momentous occasion, and the Kings Scholars, who will hold an important piece of history!

If you would like to see the service it will commence at 3pm in Durham Cathedral. The service is open to all, without the need for tickets. This open invitation reflects the Cathedral's commitment to being a welcoming place for worship and community. Furthering it with the chance to watch it around the world or from home on a YouTube livestream which can be found here
