Four of our fantastic Sixth Form pupils received their Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) results this week. After a long month of waiting, they found out that their hard work had paid off as they achieved an A*, 2 A’s and 1 B grade.

The EPQ is an addition to the academic enrichment programme offered at Durham School in the Sixth Form. Pupils have the freedom to select their own subject and, with supervision from appointed staff, are responsible for researching the topic, producing their project, maintaining a production ‘log’ and, finally, presenting their projects to a small audience.

Let’s take a look at their projects and what the pupils hope to do after Sixth Form:

Maggie - Project: Noise cancellation in commercial aircrafts

Maggie has applied to study Aeronautical Engineering/Engineering at university, and currently has conditional offers from Imperial College, London, and the universities of Bath and Bristol.
 

Liviu - Project: Genetic modifications of tomatoes

Liviu has applied to study Biochemistry at UK universities and currently has a conditional offer from Exeter university.  He has also applied to study Pharmaceutical Sciences at Utrecht University.
 

Tom - Project: Robotisation

Tom has applied to study Business Management/Management and has received offers from all five of his chosen courses at the universities of Liverpool, Loughborough, Nottingham, Sheffield and Northumbria.
 

Oliver – Project: Benefits of a football club to its local community

Oliver has applied to study Economics and has received offers from all five of his chosen courses at the universities of Cardiff, Glasgow, Lancaster, Loughborough and Sheffield.  Oliver is combining his study of three A Levels and an EPQ with being part of Sunderland AFC's Foundation of Light Scholarship Programme, meaning that he spends two days per week training and playing football with Sunderland.  

All of these projects sound fascinating and we are proud of the pupils for all of their hard work. Well done!
