Senior Fundraising and Development

On Thursday, 14 November 2024, Durham Cathedral Schools Foundation proudly marked a significant milestone with the official opening of Lodge House, the new home for day girls at Durham School. This eagerly awaited development underscores the school’s dedication to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment where pupils can thrive.

The guest of honour was Katie Fraser (née Geiser, Pimlico 1992–94), Durham School’s first female Head of School. After studying languages at Oxford, Katie has built a distinguished career as a writer and columnist. She spoke passionately about her time at Durham, reflecting on how the school’s values nurture resilience, confidence, and leadership in girls and young women. Her inspiring remarks highlighted the lasting impact of a Durham education on pupils and guests alike.

A Collaborative Achievement

Principal Mr. Kieran McLaughlin praised the teamwork and dedication that brought Lodge House to life. He commended the efforts of Head of Estates Hugh Shannon, Development Director Andrew Beales, and others who worked tirelessly to ensure the house was ready to welcome pupils in September.

A Vision Rooted in Kindness

Housemistress Mrs. Spence shared her heartfelt vision for Lodge House as a home built on happiness and kindness, where every pupil feels valued and supported. Her words resonated with all in attendance, encapsulating the ethos of the new house.

A Gesture of Gratitude

To thank Katie Fraser for her support, Head of Lodge House Niamh G. presented her with a print of Pimlico House, the first girls’ house at Durham School, where Katie spent her school years. The artwork, created by former teacher Mr. John Renshaw, symbolised the school’s enduring legacy of female education.

A Blessed Beginning

The ceremony concluded with a blessing from Fr. Simon, the School Chaplain, who prayed for the success and well-being of all who will call Lodge House their home.

A Bright Future

With over 100 guests and pupils in attendance, the unveiling of the commemorative plaque was a proud moment for the Durham School community. Lodge House represents not just a new physical space but a place where girls will grow, thrive, and create cherished memories for years to come.

Katie Fraser’s speech reminded us of Durham’s mission to instil “confidence for life” in every pupil—a vision that Lodge House will continue to uphold.
