Durham School Pupils Prove That Mileage Does Make Champions

Senior Sport

On Saturday 10th October, Durham School Boat Club (DSBC) took six crews to the Tyne Long Distance Sculls Head race. Every DSBC crew rowed the fastest time in their division and two of the junior 18 crews dominated the entire competition by leaving with the joint fastest time of the day. Not bad for the second race of the season.

DSBC’s motto, ‘Mileage Makes Champions’, is one that holds great meaning to the current pupils and also to the Old Dunelmians rowers who have left the school. The time and dedication that the pupils put into their training and their attitude towards the sport is nothing short of oar-inspiring; they truly go the extra mile. Both pupils and staff are committed to developing the squad as a whole and this is reflected in the results.

Despite Covid-19 restrictions, Durham School are delighted to say that we have been able to continue with organised sport whilst adhering to the Government safety guidelines. The DSBC pupils follow an intense training programme with between 10-15 hours on the water per week. This is accompanied by 5 strength and conditioning sessions, 2 hours allocated for indoor ergo training, and 2 more sessions for cardiovascular development.

Eddie Bryant, Director of Rowing at Durham School, said:

I’d like to say a huge thanks to Tyne Amateur Rowing Club and the previous work by NUBC and Kat Bulmer which allowed us to race again at the Tyne this weekend. With minimal racing at the moment, it’s great to get the pupils on the water and see where we are in terms of performance and more importantly give all the pupils a boost, mental health is high on our priorities at the moment. Excellent performances from all crews that rowed with percentages looking really good – this bodes well for the season ahead. It was good to see so many OD’s out in local crews for Tyne and NUBC.

Good luck to all of the DSBC pupils for the rest of the year!
